Dashboard design starts with a narrow question: what decision is waiting, who makes it, and what reading would change their mind. Answer those three and the layout mostly writes itself.
Everything after that is subtraction, which is harder and more valuable than choosing a chart type.
What Dashboard Design Involves Here
One question per screen. A page answering “are we ahead or behind on sales this month” is useful. Adding stock and website traffic to the same page answers nothing in particular and costs four seconds of load time.
Charts chosen for the question. Trends are lines. Category comparisons are sorted bars, horizontal where labels need room. Nine-slice pie charts become bars, because nobody ranks nine wedges by eye.
Colour as signal. Keeping brand colour off every visual leaves something to mark an exception with, which is why the red tile still works in month six.
Contrast that survives a projector. Tiles are checked against WCAG AA, so the figure a finance director needs stays readable in a bright meeting room.
Built for the Device It Gets Opened On
A real share of the audience is a director opening the link on a phone between meetings, and that changes the design rather than shrinking it.
A phone layout is three tiles in priority order with the detail a tap away. Building one properly takes an extra half day and it decides whether the thing gets used at all.
Load time belongs in the same conversation. Analytics dashboards that take eleven seconds to render get abandoned before they finish, and the cause is nearly always the model.
The Monthly Pack Nobody Enjoys
A good share of requests for data dashboards turn out to be reporting automation.
Somebody loses the first three days of each month to exporting from four systems, pasting into a workbook, repairing formatting, and emailing a PDF to a board. They want those days back with the numbers still arriving.
That is a scheduled refresh, a stable model, and a generated document at the end. Less interesting to build, and usually the piece that justifies the whole project.
Right-Sized for the Question
Where four people need six numbers once a week, a well built spreadsheet with a query behind it is the correct tool, and we will set that up.
Once the file starts being emailed around, a data analytics dashboard earns its overhead because there is otherwise more than one version of the truth. Where the estate is Microsoft, a microsoft bi dashboard built on a governed model gives every reader the same definitions.
What Is Handed Over
Reports, the model beneath them, written documentation, and a working session with whoever owns it next.
Dashboard design your own team can extend is worth more than a report only its builder understands. Tell us which decision is waiting and we will tell you what answers it.

Where two systems disagree about a figure, the fix is data quality rather than a chart. Where data arrives late or by email attachment, that is data engineering, and where the estate is specifically Microsoft, the model, refresh and licensing detail sits on the Power BI page.
